eCommerce Platform Comparison
Shopify or BigCommerce — which one should you actually build on?
Both are SaaS eCommerce platforms. Both handle hosting, security, and payments. Both have themes, apps, and good SEO capabilities. On feature checklists, they look nearly identical. But in practice, there's a clear winner for most eCommerce brands.
Shopify dominates the market with 4.4 million stores and an ecosystem of 8,000+ apps. BigCommerce is the underdog with strong native features but a smaller ecosystem. We've built on both and here's the honest comparison.

Shopify Apps Available
The short version: Shopify is the right choice for 80% of eCommerce brands because of its app ecosystem, third-party integrations, and community. BigCommerce has stronger native features (built-in multi-channel selling, no transaction fees), but the smaller ecosystem limits your growth options.
Let's break it down feature by feature.
Shopify vs BigCommerce — feature by feature
| Feature | Shopify | BigCommerce |
|---|---|---|
| App Ecosystem | Massive — 8,000+ apps covering every possible need. Klaviyo, ReCharge, Gorgias, and every major eCommerce tool integrates natively. | Smaller app marketplace. Core needs are covered, but niche tools and bleeding-edge integrations are often Shopify-first. |
| Built-in Features | Core features are good. Advanced features (reviews, loyalty, subscriptions) require apps, which adds monthly cost. | Stronger out-of-the-box. Multi-channel selling, product variants (up to 600), and real-time shipping quotes included without apps. |
| Transaction Fees | 0.5-2% transaction fee unless you use Shopify Payments. Shopify Payments eliminates the fee. | No transaction fees on any plan, regardless of payment processor. Clear advantage if Shopify Payments isn't available in your country. |
| Ease of Use | Very beginner-friendly. Intuitive admin, clean theme editor, and massive community for support. | Slightly steeper learning curve. More powerful admin panel but less intuitive for beginners. |
| SEO | Good SEO with auto-generated sitemaps and mobile-first themes. URL structure is somewhat rigid (/products/, /collections/). | Excellent SEO. More flexible URL structure, better native blog tools, and customizable robots.txt. |
| Scalability | Scales beautifully. Shopify Plus for enterprise ($2,300+/month). Infrastructure handles any traffic volume. | Scales well with BigCommerce Enterprise. Good headless commerce support via APIs. |
| Headless Commerce | Storefront API and Hydrogen framework. Mature headless ecosystem with Next.js support. | Strong headless support with open APIs. BigCommerce positions itself as a headless-first platform. |
Our recommendation
Shopify for most brands. The ecosystem advantage is decisive — when you need a subscription tool, a loyalty program, or a specific marketing integration, it's almost always available and well-maintained for Shopify. BigCommerce is the right choice when native features matter more than ecosystem (large product catalogs with many variants), when you can't use Shopify Payments and want to avoid transaction fees, or when SEO/content is your primary growth channel.
Pick Shopify if...
Pick Shopify if you want the largest ecosystem of apps and integrations, if your growth strategy involves paid ads + email marketing, or if you want the simplest path to a live, revenue-generating store.
Pick BigCommerce if...
Pick BigCommerce if you need 250+ product variants per product, if you're in a country where Shopify Payments isn't available, or if SEO and content marketing are your primary growth channels.
