Choose the right popup tool
If you use Klaviyo (and for eCommerce, you should), use Klaviyo built-in forms. They are native, fast-loading, and automatically add subscribers to your lists and flows. No extra app needed. No additional JavaScript. If you are not on Klaviyo: Privy, Justuno, and OptiMonk are solid alternatives. Avoid installing multiple popup tools — each one adds load time.
Set the trigger and timing correctly
Do not fire the popup on page load. Wait 15-30 seconds or until the visitor has scrolled 50% of the page. This ensures they are actually interested before you interrupt them. Add an exit-intent trigger for desktop (fires when the mouse moves toward the close button). For mobile: use a scroll-based trigger since exit-intent does not work on phones. Never show the popup more than once per session. If someone closes it, respect that — do not show it again for 7+ days.
Craft an offer that makes signing up obvious
A popup without an offer converts at 1-2%. A popup with a clear incentive converts at 5-8%. Best eCommerce popup offers: 10-15% off first order (most common, works well). Free shipping on first order (better margin protection than percentage discounts). Free guide or exclusive content (works for brands that do not want to discount). Dollar-off amount ($10 off orders over $50 — feels tangible and protects margin). Test different offers quarterly. What works for one brand does not always work for another.
Design for mobile first
60%+ of your traffic is mobile. Design the popup for a phone screen first, then adapt for desktop. Mobile rules: full-screen takeover (maximizes conversion), large close button (do not trap people), single email field + submit button (no phone number on the popup — ask for that in the welcome flow), bold headline and clear offer above the form field. Keep it to three elements: headline, offer, and email capture. Nothing else.
Connect to your welcome flow immediately
When someone submits the popup, two things should happen instantly: they receive a confirmation email with their discount code (within 60 seconds), and they enter your welcome email series. The popup is not the end — it is the beginning of a relationship. A 7-email welcome series over 14 days converts 15-20% of new subscribers into first-time buyers when the flow is built properly.
