How to fix this — step by step
Enable guest checkout and remove required account creation
24% of shoppers abandon carts because they're forced to create an account. In Shopify Admin, go to Settings → Checkout → Customer accounts and select "Accounts are optional." Never require account creation before purchase. You can invite customers to create an account on the thank-you page after they've already bought. The order matters — get the sale first, then ask for the account.
Remove every unnecessary form field
Go to Settings → Checkout → Form options. Remove the company name field (almost nobody needs it for B2C). Make the phone number optional unless you're using it for SMS marketing. Remove the second address line unless you sell in areas where it's genuinely needed. Each field you remove reduces cognitive load and drop-off. We've seen stores lift checkout completion by 5-8% just by removing 2-3 fields.
Enable Shop Pay, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and PayPal
Shop Pay converts 1.72x better than standard Shopify checkout — Shopify's own data from millions of transactions. Apple Pay and Google Pay allow one-tap purchasing on mobile, which eliminates virtually all checkout friction. PayPal captures customers who don't trust entering card details on unfamiliar stores. Go to Settings → Payments and enable every accelerated checkout option available. The more payment methods you offer, the fewer excuses customers have to abandon.
Show shipping costs and delivery timelines early
48% of cart abandonment is caused by unexpected extra costs — primarily shipping. Don't surprise people at checkout. Show shipping costs on product pages or at minimum in the cart. Better yet: offer free shipping above a threshold and display that threshold prominently throughout the site. "Free shipping on orders over $75" in your announcement bar removes the biggest objection before anyone reaches checkout.
Add trust signals throughout the checkout
Shopify checkout already has SSL, but customers don't know what that padlock means. Add visible trust signals: "Secure checkout" badge, payment method logos (Visa, Mastercard, PayPal), money-back guarantee text, and estimated delivery dates. On Shopify Plus, you can add these via Checkout UI Extensions. On standard plans, the checkout is less customizable, but you can add trust messaging to the cart page and thank-you page.
Set up abandoned checkout recovery
Even with a perfect checkout, some people won't complete their purchase. Set up a 3-email abandoned checkout flow in Klaviyo (not Shopify's built-in basic recovery email). Trigger at 1 hour, 24 hours, and 48-72 hours. Include the exact products in their cart with images and direct return links. The first email is a reminder. The second adds social proof. The third (optional) includes a small incentive. This flow recovers 5-15% of abandoned checkouts.
